Suzy, Are you from KC? I remember all those shows(but was a little to young to go at the time) I remember an Interview on KY-102 with Felix during the Sinful
tour and after that they played Don't take your love, and that was the last time I heard Angel on a KC radio station............STEWY

Herb, do you think Angel could have headlined Madison Square or Nassau or Meadowlands with strong support??

I saw Angel at both the Garden and Nassau Coliseum, opening for Styx...and neither show was a sell out, and Styx was certainly the much bigger draw. I
don't think Angel could have made a large dent in selling out the Garden, they peaked when they sold out the Palladium for two straight nights.

no, angel could never sell out msg or nassau as the headliner. i saw them a few months later as the hedliner at the capitol in passiac. msg holds about 20,000
and the capitol held about 3,000. i still list the capitol as one of my favorite shows of all time. when they opened for styx they were good but not like on
their own.

I know...I remain convinced that had Angel been able to present their full spectacle at arenas cross country, backed by the movie, "Angel At
Midnight" They would broken out in a big way!!

Yes Stewy I am in Olathe KS. You must be around here too? I actually was on the radio with Felix when they did that interview. They took calls after the
interview and I got in. One of the reasons I got to meet them again that year. They only came to KC one more time 80. I really wish they would have had the
chance to become bigger than they did. It saddens me that even our Classic Rock station won't play any Angel just because they never had a chart hit. What
BS that it! Classic Rock is classic rock and there is a lot of music that should be played regardless of whether they had a dang hit or not. My buddy from AZ
just sent me the double CD set with ANGEL and HELLUVA BAND and I've been rockin it out lately. I have them on LP but all of my ANGEL CDs were stolen from
my car a few years back and haven't gotten them all replaced yet. So, that was a nice surprise from him. Jammin again to Angel in the car... I am planning
on going to Las Vegas to see Frank Dimino's band PLAYGROUND. Was going to see them New Years this year but didn't make it off the strip so I am
planning on either May or later this fall.

Axxellein wrote:As much as I love the band, I don't think they were ever going to get any bigger. Their image hurt them too much. My older brother who saw them a few time always says "ANGEL sucks" yet if I am listening to ANGEL and he does not know who it is, he says it is pretty good. But as soon as I tell him who it is, he says again "ANGEL sucks"...Strickly because of the image. I would bet most guys thought that and would not give them a chance. |

Well yes, Angel's all white image put them at a disadvantage within certain parts of the Hard Rock fanbase, not that it hurt Queen & a host of other
bands!! I mean if Kiss could become supertars!! Ludicrous!! A concerted coordinated Casablanca campaign of 3 or 4 onrolling Top 20 singles off the Sinful
effort.....Styx headlining over Angel?? Ridiculous!

True, Queen did the all white thing for a bit. BUT, they still did not have the "Pretty Boy" stigma that ANGEL had. I mean, ANGEL had PUNKY MEADOWS.
Most guys are NOT going to be into Punky's look. I myself thought and still think he is one of the coolest ever but the typical stoner hard rock fan is
going to have a problem with the image Punky had, even though he actually looked cool as hell. The image hurt them in the long run.
Say what you will about KISS but when they came out, they had CATCHY, simple, HEAVY hard rock tunes, ANGEL was more toward the progressive side early on so that may have turned some people off. Plus KISS were not pretty boys and they had the BEST show around. What was not to like? Also, If ANGEL did not break loose with "White Hot" it was not going to happen. That album was their best shot at becoming huge. By the time Sinful came around, they were 5 or 6 albums into their career, new wave was around the corner, and the whole "GLAM" thing had run it's course. At least for a few years until the Hollywood scene reared its head. Had ANGEL been a New Band in 1980 without the white image, they would have been better off. And, I hate to say it but had they got a new contract with Fergie and a different name, I think they would have been contenders at that time. ANGEL had a good run and they were just about there but did not have the last push to get them over the edge. Same could be said about STARZ. And it seems to me, STARZ had better opening gigs w/KISS, Aerosmith etc..........ANGEL never had that. |

Kerry, this is what makes discussing Angel so much fun & challenging!! The complex, multi faceted analysis of all the sides & corners! All set against
the unique landscape of the Mid- Late 70s!!.....Fascinating!! ... I'll start a new thread, as this slot deals with concert/touring minutiae....

OK, Den,
now I'll REALLY have to open up and dig thru my collection, I know I have a bunch of concert tickets, and such as well, you're missing that date of them playing the Show Place in Dover, N.J. I believe from their costumes in the photos (they're small) that it 'looks' like it *could* be Helluva Band, but I could be mistaken and it might be right at the junction between the 1st and 2nd albums. When I find the ad w/ the date I'll let you know. I'll make a list of what I have and share it with you all. OH! I Do have a copy of one of the Hotel rooming assignments of who roomed w/ who back in N.Y., might be at a Holiday Inn or something like that. I know Gregg's brother Clay Giuffria was one of the roadies as well as Punky's older brother, Robin (Crunchy) Meadows. Will get back to you on what I have... -Rik- |

Angel at the Capitol Theater, N.J. | ||

I believe when Angel played at the Capitol Theater, in Passiac, NJ, it was .38 Special opening for them and getting summarily booed too.
That was where I met their roadie, (and my eventual Lawyer) Kimble Ouerbacker III, who filled my head with first-hand Angel road stories. I also met the band backstage too, and they remembered me from previous meetings and shows. Although Gregg, Frank, Barry & Punky were cool, that was where I met Felix, and he looked at me like 'What're you supposed to be, a Punky clone? He didn't seem very friendly at the time. Maybe when he heard my name mentioned, he put 2 & 2 together, as my name possibly being passed around as a contender for the bass position after Mickie, when he got the gig, who knows, just guessing there... Anyway, it was a great show. Maybe I still have the concert programs, I'll look for them. Rik |

Hi Den,
OK, as I told Joe, offline, I opened my Angel memorabilia box this weekend and man, there is just TONS of stuff in there!!! First, let me get the touring dates info out of the way... From my two HUGE 3-ring binder scrapbooks I found the following info: A) A small ad for Angel at the Palladium, NYC, Saturday, April 16th / "Angel at Midnight" introducing PIPER. The small ad has the group photo shot from the 1st album press kit. I have 3 tickets from this show in the scrapbook. @ $6.50 ea. B) An ad for Angel w/ Judas Priest and the Godz. Friday, March 10th/sold out, extra show added March 11th. tix: $7.50 I have xerox copies of my two tickets, 'Orchestra/left' (These were the seats in front of Punky). C) A ticket from the Capitol Theater show, Passaic, NJ, Friday, February 23, 1979, John Scher presents Angel. (Probably the show w/ .38 Special opening). Price, $8.10 D) An Electric Factory Concerts presents, Angel at teh Tower Theater, Upper Darby, PA., price, $7.00, (stamped CBS Records) MArch 9, 1979. Orchestra seat. E) The Rooming List for Angel and crew dated March 2nd, 1979. Holiday Inn of Hempstead, L.I.)-(Most likely coincides w/ their concert at the Nassau Collesium show nearby, (my tix were gone after this show). Shows Bill Schereck & Graham Holmes in rm 403/ Punky Meadows & Robin Meadows, rm 405/ Barry Brandt & Hugh Horn rm 411/ Felix Robinson & Frank Dimino rm 416/ Gregg Giuffria & Angelo Arcuri rm 420/ Clay Giuffria & Joe Frilot rm 421. (This is also around when I became friends with Hughie (Barry's drum tech), and Angelo, who did sound for them, later becoming Dio's sound man for years). F) An Ad from the Aquarian Newspaper, (New Jersey rock paper) dated September 15-22, 1976, for Angel at The Show Place in Dover, NJ. (the on-again, off-again scheduled show that we missed). Show advertised for Thursday, September, 16th, (1976). HOWEVER I Do have color photos that someone took who DID go to the show! These are the old 3.5 x 3.5 pictures, but you can clearly see the show costumes, etc. a few close-ups too. Mickie still had the long, scoop-sleeved costume from the first tour-early days. This club although HUGE, was so far from anything, out in the middle of bum-f*ck, you had to have a massive following to do any significant 'damage' by way of filling it. From the photos, for Angel, they were most likely playing to a near-empty house from what I can tell. I seriously regret not going to this show...we were waiting for it. So, Den (and others) there's my scrap-book early Angel tour dates report. I hope that helps. Oh...did I happen to mention, that I have an original "PASS" for ANGEL in "FOXES" December, 21, 1978, 4:00 PM, Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles....? This was for the filming of the Angel in concert sequence in the film. Cheers, Rik |
