Angel Who? | ||
|
Even at Angel's 'peak' in popularity, I can assure you that most who attended these two shows, '78 &79, I believe, were there to see
Priest. In fact a small chant of " who the f**k's Angel" was definitely heard throughout the crowd! Btw, the Jam most definitely opened one of
these shows, in fact, they were in the lobby of WSAN radio when I picked my tickets up on the day of the show, even though I had no idea who the hell they
were, until they walked on stage later that night.

ANGEL IN HUNTINTON WEST VA. | ||
|
I thought when Angel came to Huntington West Va. they were the headline act. That
would have been when the Godzz opened up the concert. There was one more band, we can not remember who it was.

I have a list of all the Jam US tour dates for 77, 78 and 79, so it would be interesting to see which shows tie up. As far as I can see, it isn't one of
those on the present list of Angel gigs we have so far.

They also MUST have played their hometown of Washington D.C. at least once!!

Perhaps they were a last minute fill in. It's just a guess but I think the show in question was some time in late February, March or early April, 1979. |

According to the chart February 27,1979 they were in Allentown.I don't know if that's the correct date or not. I have a stub from one of these shows
somewhere, but I think it was the Godz/ Priest/ Angel lineup the year before. I'll check it out..

That must be the show! I found my two stubs, but the only info on my half was- Sunday- price $5.50/advance-$6.50/day of show- no.s 03664&03665 and half of
Angel's logo. Checked a 1978 calendar and March19 was indeed a Sunday. There were at least 3,665 people at that show.

Makes sense, the Godz/ Judas Priest/Angel lineup must have been the February 1979 show. The year before I went with a girl, which is the show I kept the stubs
for, but in '79 I went with my cousin. The next day we ran out and bought the Godz record. Great show! The Godz rocked, Priest kicked ass and, of course
Angel were spectacular, talking logo and all! Probably the best show I've ever attended.

the 20-1-1979 Oklahoma date should be the Fairgrounds Arena, Oklahoma city...not Tulsa...It was my first concert . I think I emailed the former Angel board
about this a couple of years ago but I never got a response. On the way out that night I found a Ted Nugent shirt lying in the snow and thought I had hit the
swag jackpot. Unfortunately it was a poorly printed bootleg and Ted's head was located in the armpit area LOL! Weekend Warriors tour...the nuge!

Angel shows | ||
|
I saw Angel a total of 4 times. First was around February 6th, 1978 in Chicago at the Aragon Ballroom, with the Godz opening. Eric Moore of The Godz got in a
fight onstage with one of his bandmembers. I got to talk to Barry sometime in the early 80's. When I mentioned the Aragon he asked if that place was still
as rough as it was then lol. Was an amazing show! Back in the day, Barry had a habit of lobbing drumsticks out into the audience quite often during the shows.
I caught 2 sticks during this show, I could hardly believe it. I had been playing drums for about a year and these sticks were just the catylyst I needed to
continue down that path. If you listen to any bootlegs of the shows you can hear where he might drop out for a beat or so, thats when he would throw a stick
out. They played a month later near the end of March 1978 at the Hammond Civic Center in Indiana. Mahogany Rush was supposed to open for them but they
cancelled so a punk band called The Jamm opened instead. People were hurling cups and things at them (The Jamm) onstage. I actually made a bootleg of that show
that I would give my pinky to find again. A show opening for Styx happened in December of the same year at the Chicago Stadium, which I couldn't go to.
They came to Chicago again in March 1979 at the Aragon Ballroom in support of the "Sinful " album with TKO opening. Another awesome show. Finally, I
saw them in April of 1980 on the Rock n Roll Marathon tour at the Aragon once again. The only band name on the sign for that show was Angel. It was kinda
disappointing because they wore street clothes, Punky and Felix had cut their hair short and there was no stage show, and no solos by the band members. I still
have a few shots laying around in a scrapbook somewhere from a couple of those shows.

I did some digging and saw that the Aragon ball room show of 1978 was Feb 24 w/The Godz and then they played there again on March 24, 1979 w/TKO in support of
"Sinful". Their last appearance in the Aragon was April 4, 1980 on the Rock n Roll Marathon. Their actual first appearance at the Aragon was March
25, 1977 w/Starz and The Runaways.

The first time I saw Angel was Feb-March 1976 at the Randhurst Twin Ice
Arena in Mt. Prospect, IL. Ted Nugent was headliner and Blackfoot was the opening act. I tried researching for an exact date, no luck, sorry. |

Re: D.C. shows | ||
|
As a D.C. suburbs Angel fan it was always a drag that they so rarely played here. I'd see ads for NY Palladium and Cleveland dates all the time but never
D.C.!!! Anyway, they only played two gigs in the D.C. area (except for maybe a club gig or two during the first album). I saw them headline at the Lisner
Auditrium at George Washington Unviversity (with Billy Squier's Piper opening) during the "On Earth" Tour in the Spring of '77 (would have to
dig out my ticket stub for the exact date but am sure it was right around the Palladium and Tower dates). That show still hangs in my memory as one of the
coolest gigs I've ever seen (the talking backdrop and the magic appearances out of the boxes!). Unfortunately, the next time thru was many years later at
our local arena at the time, the Capital Centre in Largo, MD, during the Marathon Tour (listed above) where they had dropped the white outfits and played a
real short set (I have a fairly decent audio tape of that gig).
Since then there were a couple of Reunion shows at Jaxx in Springfield, VA and the Thunder Dome (not Hammerjacks!) in Baltimore, MD (again listed above). Also have a pretty good tape of that Jaxx show which I had made a copy for Punky so he could listen to it! I had begged Punky for weeks prior to that Jaxx show for him to show up (he lived about 15 miles from Jaxx at the time) but he wanted no part of it. For the record Punky is the nicest and coolest "Rock Star" I think I've ever met. p.s. LOVE the board... as always, THANKS P.G.! |

RE ANGEL IN WEST VA. | ||
|
You know I mentioned that ANGEL had played in Huntington WestVa. The Godz opened up the show and there was another
band with them
I could not remember who the other band was that performed with them that night, I am now wondering if it was the BABY'S? Do you know if the BABY'S toured with ANGEL? |

I think that US "On Earth As It In Heaven" tour date that lists the Orpheum Theatre took place in Madison, WI. I can't prove it, but I saw an ad
in an old music rag years later and I remember seeing an Angel ad, I believe for what could have been this show. Keep up the good work. Angel rocks!

Angel March 22, 1978 at Memorial Hall in Kansas City Kansas w/ The Godz Ticket $6
***FYI on this show...Sweet was suppose to be the Headliner and they cancelled out due to Brian Connolly the singer for Sweet had left the band so this gig was cancelled for them. Sweet is the reason I went to this gig to begin with and fell in love with Angel that night. Also met the band after the show. I still have the pics, autographs, programs etc. Angel March 21, 1979 at Memorial Hall in Kansas City Kansas- don't recall an opening act this night. Ticket $7.50 ** I talked to Felix on the radio station KY102 in KC that day. Met the band that night again. The Rock Marathon May 31, 1980 with Angel, Humble Pie, Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, Missouri Ticket $? I think about $10 ** Sadly the last time I saw Angel I did try to get to Frank's Playground gig in Vegas for NYE this year but didn't make it off the Strip. |
